Photography (pronounced /fәˈtɒɡrәfi/) is the process, activity and art of creating still or moving pictures by recording radiation on a sensitive medium, such as a photographic film, or an electronic sensor. Light patterns reflected or emitted from objects activate a sensitive chemical or electronic sensor during a timed exposure, usually through a photographic lens in a device known as a camera that also stores the resulting information chemically or electronically. Photography has many uses for business, science, art and pleasure.

Lens and mounting of a large-format camera. A historic camera: the Contax S of 1949 — the first pentaprism SLR. Nikon F of 1959 — the first 35mm film system camera. Late Production Minox B camera with later style "honeycomb" selenium light meter A portable folding reflector positioned to "bounce" sunlight onto a model

The word "photograph" was coined in 1839 by Sir John Herschel and is based on the Greek φῶς (phos) "light" and γραφή (graphê) "representation by means of lines" or "drawing", together meaning "drawing with light". Traditionally, the products of photography have been called negatives and photographs, commonly shortened to photos.

What kind of photography equipment do I need to start out with?
Q. I would like to start a small photography business...nothing major as I am an amateur photographer and am not sure of myself/skills yet. I do think that I take pretty decent photos and have a great passion for photography but don't really know how to begin. What kind of fairly inexpensive camera is a good start? I do have a Sony Digital Camera and a Canon SLR 35mm. Also, what other kind of equipment is imperative when beginning-just to look like you know what your doing? Any help would be greatly appreciated! One more thing before I forget, what is needed to take great photos of food/wine? Is there a special kind of setup that I would need?

A. You may not like this answer but it is intended to be honest and helpful. Don't start any business, not even a small one, until you are sure of what you are doing. Apart from the risk to your reputation through failing to deliver you may be liable to losses. Don't buy more kit until you are a little closer to knowing what you want to photograph - make the most of what you have by learning to use it to it's best. Equipment can cost a lot, especially when more specialised - much food photography for example needs larger format than 35mm or high end digital to get published and lighting is essential and expensive. Look at as many good quality published or exhibited pictures of your subject as you can. Visit exhibitions showing your subject… [cont.]

How to get started in erotic photography?
Q. I want to get started in erotic photography and have no idea what the first step is. Are there classes available specific to nude photography? How do I build a portfolio? What is the best way to get "exposure"? How would I find models? What is the best way of compensation?

A. Hello, Interesting question. There are a couple of ways to get into erotic photography. Of course you will need models and there are hundreds of models just crying out for photos themselves. The best way to get a portfolio together is to find models who will work what is known as TFP - that means Time for Prints. You will supply the model with prints for THEIR portfolio in exchange for their modelling time. You will have to work out the deal but usually its about a dozen prints from the shoot in a size about A3 but you will have to work that out. Most models will work TFP at the start of their career. It is important to build up trust with a model especially when doing erotic photography. There are courses and even vacations on… [cont.]
