Porcelain is a ceramic material made by heating raw materials, generally including clay in the form of kaolin, in a kiln to temperatures between 1,200 °C (2,192 °F) and 1,400 °C (2,552 °F). The toughness, strength, and translucence of porcelain arise mainly from the formation of glass and the mineral mullite within the fired body at these high temperatures. Porcelain derives its present name from old Italian porcellana (cowrie shell) because of its resemblance to the translucent surface of the shell. Porcelain can informally be referred to as "china" in some English-speaking countries, as China was the birth place of porcelain making. Properties associated with porcelain include low permeability and elasticity; considerable strength, hardness, glassiness, brittleness, whiteness, translucence, and resonance; and a high resistance to chemical attack and thermal shock. For the purposes of trade, the Combined Nomenclature of the European Communities defines porcelain as being "completely vitrified, hard, impermeable (even before glazing), white or artificially coloured, translucent (except when of considerable thickness) and resonant." However, the term porcelain lacks a universal definition and has "been applied in a very unsystematic fashion to substances of diverse kinds which have only certain surface-qualities in common" (Burton 1906). Porcelain is used to make table, kitchen, sanitary, and decorative wares; objects of fine art; and tiles. Its high resistance to the passage of electricity makes porcelain an excellent insulator. Dental porcelain is used to make false teeth, caps, crowns and veneers. From Wikipedia under the

Q. I live in Dallas Texas. I would like to know how much is the average cost to get six porcelain dental veneers? Asked by A K - Sun Apr 6 01:24:09 2008 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments A. It depends on where you are and the dentist's general perception of fees. You can expect porcelain veneers to cost from about $700-to-$1,000 each in most offices. Some are a little less and some are a lot more. A good average in the US for 6 veneers would be $4-6,000. Answered by Sam - Sun Apr 6 02:33:47 2008 How can I find out the brand name/maker of some porcelain dolls? Q. My wife was given some porcelain dolls from her mother. How can we find out what they are worth if they are worth anything. We know they were purchased at a store but no idea which one. Is there anyway to find out where they came from? Asked by mikeyob_77 - Thu Jan 18 18:44:15 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. You could go to your local library, and get some doll books, however some are for reference and they might not let you take them out, or bring the dolls to the library and check, from the books I have at home, if the dolls are old porcelain, the manufacturer's names usually initials and numbers are at the back of the head of the doll. In very old dolls such as Bebes Jumeau and so on you will notice that the hair comes out like a wig this is called a pate, it tells you that the doll is old as they had this wigs made out of real human hair, the clothing on the doll and aspect, will also tell you about how the doll might be. Look into Kovel's antique guide books, they usually have a section for dolls, but it is not extensive as a doll book… [cont.] Answered by lovesherchina - Fri Jan 19 13:56:55 2007 What is the cheapest and easiest way to strip paint from a porcelain sink?
Q. I live in an old apartment (near campus, which is why I have this strange problem) in which some idiot has painted the otherwise lovely kitchen sink. Twice. I want to strip the paint off of it so that I feel less like I'm living in a dump. It's porcelain with cast-iron underneath, and the building is in a historical district. Also, I want to be as environmentally friendly about it as possible. Suggestions?
